The Choreographer’s Trust – Phase Two: Documentation Materials and DVD
The Choreographers Trust was designed to create the opportunity to:
•   pass on selected works of my choreography so that they have a life beyond my own performance;
•   make my works available to other dance artists for vehicles of their own expression and development;
•   explore the role of interpreter and how their individual artistry informs their performance of a choreographic work;
•   create a comprehensive resource, in a variety of media, to serve as educational tools and artistic records of specific choreographies.

Rex Harrington and Sasha Ivanochko's performances of Brute in February 2005 marked the end of the first phase of The Choreographer's Trust; the teaching, learning, documenting and presenting of all six dances:

Dancers:        Rex Harrington / formerly of The National Ballet of Canada

Sasha Ivanochko / independent dancer, formerly of Toronto Dance TheatreAndrea Nann and Kate Alton were alternately presented performing Unfold during my company’s May 2004 home season in Toronto, also called Unfold.  Rex Harrington and Sasha Ivanochko were alternately presented performing Brute during Peggy Baker Dance Projects’ February 2005 home season in Toronto, called music for piano and solo dancer

The process of passing these dances on has been documented in a variety of ways and the materials will be archived by the University of Calgary and Dance Collection Danse.  Choreologist Peter Ottmann is creating written scores using Benesh notation and his collaboration has been instrumental in helping me to define the choreography, as distinct from my own interpretation.  Writer Amy Bowring has kept journals of the teaching process, as have each of the dancers.  Filmmaker Mark Adam has shot video of the rehearsals and stage performances, which is now waiting to be edited.  Visual artist Jerry Silverberg joined in Year Two, doing sketches in pencil and charcoal of Sanctum, Yang, Unfold, and Brute.

We now enter the second phase of this project, which is to hire a Project Co-ordinator to oversee professional editors, designers and technicians in compiling all of the materials into a manageable and practical resource on DVD.  This resource will then be made available to dance students, teachers, scholars and critics across Canada through the University of Calgary and Dance Collection Danse for reference and for reconstruction.  Funding for this stage is also being solicited through a targeted campaign to private foundations.
